Description of Niam Niam Parrot
The Niam Niam---Poicephalus crassus
The following information is a portion of an article written by Eric D.
- Poicephalus crassus There are no subspecies as far as I know.
Similar in color and shape to the Brown headed but larger. Somewhere in
between the size of that and the Jardine but also differs by the fact it has
red iris.
This species is indigenous to The Central African Republic, Chad, Sudan and
Zaire
Habitat: Moist woodland
Breeding in captivity: No information is available
Sexing: Surgical / DNA
Availability and suitability as pets: Similar to the yellow faced parrot.
As far as I am aware there are not any of these birds being
kept in the UK. There could be the rare possibility that examples of the Niam
Niam could have been miss identified as a large Brown Headed but it can be
differentiated by the fact that the Niam Niam has red iris, not greyish yellow
as in the Brown Headed.
